Tip: Before double consonants like nn or ll the vowel is always short, e.g. können, wollen.

Before single vowels they are mostly long, e.g. Büro, schön.

➝ Final tip: Words with y are often pronounced as ü. Here are some examples to practise:

– long ü: Typ, typisch, Analyse

– short ü: Rhythmus, Symbol, System
