SUMMARY – SATZKLAMMER

The golden rule for German sentences is "Put the verb in second position!"
But what if the verb consists of two parts as it does in the Perfekt or when you use a modal verb?

Luckily, there is also an easy rule to remember:

verb part A = 2nd position
verb part B = end position
Here are some examples:

✓ Ich habe eine Präsentation geplant.

✓ Meine Kollegin hat das Meeting organisiert.

✓ Ich muss eine E-Mail schreiben.

✓ Meine Kollegin will den Konferenzraum buchen.

Pay attention that the verb part in the second position always has to match your subject, e.g.

Ich bin nach Stuttgart gefahren. (bin matches the subject Ich)
Meine Kollegen sind nach Berlin gefahren. (sind matches the subject Meine Kollegen)

Exercise 1: True or false? Answer the questions to check your understanding of the topic.

Exercise 2: What’s missing? Complete the sentences by dragging the boxes to the correct position.

Remember: The verb in 2nd position always has to match the subject.

Exercise 3: Unjumble the sentence elements and write correct sentences.

Exercise 4: Which two verb parts go together in the following sentences?

Choose the correct forms from the dropdown boxes.

Exercise 5: Choose the correct form of the verbs in brackets and complete the sentence.

Remember: The verb in 2nd position always has to match the subject.

Well done, this activity set is complete!

Don’t hesitate to ask your trainer if you have any questions.
