SUMMARY

You have two different options to form a question in German.

1. Questions with W-question word

These questions are open questions, i.e. you can ask about all kinds of different information depending on the W-question word you choose. Here’s an overview of the most important ones:

Deutsch Englisch
Wer? Who?
Was? What?
Wann? When?
Wo? Where?
Wohin? Where to?
Woher? Where from?
Wie? How?

When you form a question with one of these W-question words, always put the verb in 2nd position and make sure it matches the subject:

Wo arbeitest du?
Wann fahren wir nach München?

2. Yes/No questions

Yes/No questions are called like this because these are the only options to answer this question type. To form such a question you have to put the verb in the 1st position and make sure it matches the subject:

Arbeitest du heute?
Fahren wir nach München?

As mentioned in the video, it is quite common that you give the correct answer if necessary:

Fahren wir nach München? → Nein, wir fahren nach Hamburg.

So, your take away for this topic is:

W-question → verb = 2nd position

Yes/No-question → verb = 1st position
